reinstallation

I'm reinstalling Windows 2000 on my IBM NetVista.
Everything works fine through the 4 installation floppy
disks.

Then I load in my Win2k CD, which is an upgrade so I load
in my Win NT 3.51 CD and everything is still fine.

Then the screen says to remove any floppy's because its
going to reboot. Everything is still great until...

....When my machine reboots, it stalls on the black screen
with the underscore in the upper left blinking.

Any idea what the problem is?
At first I thought it was my hard drive, so I tried
installation with another drive and the same thing
happens. This CD is not the original CD Rom but has
worked for two years. Is this a motherboard thing? Any
idea where the corruption is>

Thanks in advance!

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Thanks for the reply but I'm not sure what you mean. On
reboot as the IBM black screen appears my only options are
F1 or F12. Any ideas?

OH, my hard drive is ATA100 (I think).
I know is isn't the SCSI or Serial and am pretty sure it
isn;t DMA

You'll want to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks or CD-Rom. The set of four
install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the
\bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or
makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

Thanks!!! That clears it up for me a little bit!
BUT I've now got another problem. I don't have the disk
that came with my hard drive. It's an IBM Deskstar 75GXP
46GB hard drive. I'm currently going through the IBM site
(which is now Hitachi because they sold the hard drive
division to them). SO I'm hoping to find the support disk
info so I can download it.
If you can help here (where to dowload) that would be
super! If not, you've already helped!!!

Thanks!!!

Nothing to do with the drive. You need the controller driver. Possibly with
your mb utilities disk (if an integrated controller) Else from the
controller manufacturer's web site.

One thing I forgot about was that this was happening
before I decided to change hard drives. Meaning it was
happening to the ORIGINAL hard drive that came with the
machine. I'm referring to the black screen of death with
the blinking white cursor in the upper left when
reinstallation shifts to the CD Rom.

DO I need to find the installation disk for my IBM hard
drive(s) and/or my Yamaha CDRW (which I purchased and
installed a few months after purchasing my computer)?

Thanks!

No, you need the ATA100 controller driver.

Thanks again!!!

Its been a good learning experience for me. I'm glad I
