I had to wipe my computer due to a virus infection, and I
can't get WinXP to reinstall! I have an upgrade version
and when I put in my previous verion of windows' CD, the
WinXP startup does not recognize it as an older version
of Windows. The previous version is a Win98 Restore CD
sold with an Emachine that I had before I built my new
computer. Any advice?

OEM Restore CDs do not qualify as a previous version of Windows
for clean installs of Windows XP.
Install Windows 98, using the Restore CD, then upgrade to
Windows XP. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a "Full Version"
of Windows XP.

P.S. The eMachine Restore CD will only work with the original
factory eMachine hardware configuration.

Restore CDs don't qualify as proevious versions.

But you can do a clean install if you have an OEM restore CD of a
previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it *can*
be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP
upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.
