REINSTALLATION OF XP DELETED PORTS/MODEM

i just installed windows xp over microsoft 98 and when i went to my network connections to connect to the internet it says that the device is missing? and when I went to my device manager, there is no list for ports. what happened, and how can i reconnect back online? Thanks

Did you check for compatibility prior to this upgrade?
Its probably an indication that a winxp driver is required for specific
hardware
Check yr modem/mb installation disks and / or try xp 'search for new
hardware'
