reinstallation of windows XP

I recently reinstalled my WIndows XP due to a virus
concern and no longer have access to my documents or my
old e-mail contacts. are these still in my memory? and is
there a way to access them or are they completely
inaccessible? please help

They should still be in the Documents and Settings folder under the old user
name. You will first need to take ownership of these files and then copy the
contents of that profile to the new profile you created during the
re-installation. These 2 articles will guide you.

If you are using XP Home, you must log in with the built-in Administrator
account in Safe Mode to take ownership. To do this, restart the system and
when the conputer starts to reboot, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly
until you see the log-in menu. Use the arrow kwys to select Safe Mode and
press ENTER. You will see the Administrator account there, select it and
press ENTER.

Follow the instructions in the article from there. The "Advanced" will be a
Button at the bottom of the users dialog.
