One of my family members has a Sony with Windows XP home. Cannot get into
system - completely blank screen when trying to boot. Apparently has
crashed. He does not have a reinstallation CD.

Now I have a Dell computer and I have a reinstallation CD W2K + SP2 which
came with my PC and has never been used.

Question: Can this reinstallation CD for Dell be used to reinstall XP on
the Sony?

Thank you.

No, it won't because it is tied to the Dell's motherboard's BIOS. Can
you boot the Sony into Safe Mode?

Probably not. If you just have a reinstall disk, then it may be tied into
the dell bios and will only work with the Dell. Also may not have the
correct drivers installed for a different PC. If it did install, you
couldn't do it legally. You can only use your copy on your PC. XP
Professional is different to XP home, costs more so the other person should
purchase a copy of XP Pro if they want to use it.

They should contact the vendor of the PC and obtain a copy of the correct
reinstall disk or go and buy a retail version.

It is a slow process, but if the disks are missing, Sony should be able to
sell you new ones. What type of system does your family member have? I have
three Sony's.

No. Can't get any response on screen when trying to boot.

There should be an option to recover the software. If there was no disk
provided with the computer, then there's an option to reinstall the
software. Maybe try pressing the f11 or another key during bootup and
restore to factory shipped contents. (of course if no one has erased the
recovery partition)

Thank you all so very much for your responses. My family member is my
grandson and he is in school right now. I will get back with him this
afternoon after school and respond. He doesn't think he can get along
without his computer but of course
neither do I. Thanks again, folks. Back with you later.

Q. Can this reinstallation CD for Dell be used to reinstall XP on
the Sony?

A. No. The Dell Reinstallation CD has a BIOS-lock mechanism
that checks for a Dell BIOS. It will not install on any other PC.

He has a VAIO Sony. Do you think there is a reinstallation within the system
since he did not get a CD reinstall with his purchase? Will F11 bring it up?
