Something in the back of my mind keeps telling me that someone said a
reinstallation CD for XP Pro would be one disk. Can't be true, right?

Windows XP Pro cdrom, as provided by Microsoft in both the
retail and non-branded OEM versions, comes on one disc. Of
course, the files are compressed, in *.CAB folders.

If one is thinking of recovery discs, image files of disk
partitions can also be heavily compressed to fit into a single
cdrom.

Well, it's puzzling why for $54 I just got official XP Pro media from IBM
(presumably OEM) for my T42 in the form of 9 CD disks.

They will include all the junk that IBM put in as well as Windows....

First, look at the table of contents for each of the discs.
There are a lot of stuff that a vendor will give to the buyer,
especially the more reputable OEM's. The Dell systems that we
received in 2005 came with 4 cdroms containing not only the
compressed Windows XP Pro but also all of the utility files
and add-ons.

Second, as for the Windows XP installation files themselves,
they will expand to about 2 GB or so...and this means at least
3 cdroms.

No puzzlement at all. But was the additional "garbage" from
IBM worth the $54? All of it could have been downloaded for
free.

Say what?! XP Pro for a specific machine for free? How? Inquring minds,
etc. Microsoft wanted $299.

Who knows how much an OEM values a Windows XP operating system. After
all, the OEM buys them in bulk, perhaps in units of thousands. Think
of the discounting and goodwill that went into the per unit license fee
the OEM pays before the pass-through to the buyer. In all likelihood,
the OS was already embedded as part of the cost of the computer.

No such thing, you misunderstood, the poster was referring to the extra IBM
fluff that could probably be downloaded for free.
