I can't believe I don't know how to do this!

With NT 3.5, 3.51 and 4, if you wanted a fresh copy of windows, you just went
ahead and installed it, selecting a new directory to put it in - you could have
as many copies as you liked.

But if I install a new versio now, what will happen to the "Documents and
settings" folder.

Obviously I want my documents, but the whole reason for the reinstall is that my
settings seem to be screwing up the machine: It takes a minute to load them and
the task bar keeps freezing.

What will get overwritten if I install a "new" version of XP?

Try a Repair Install. If you select the reinstall option, you will lose your
everything in the Documents and Settings folder and that includes the My
Documents folder and all email, newsgroup etc.
You can run the Files And Settings Transfer Wizard to backup your important
Files and Settings, but you will need to reinstall your applications after
the reinstall.
Click on the link below, or copy and paste the link into the address box
if using the web based newsgroup.

Thanks. Micheal, but I've already done a repair install with no joy.

Windows just got itself in a complete mess after I installed the ms security
patches, although having read your article it seems that the repair installation
will have removed those.

And when ms screw up, the really know how to make a good job of it. I went to do
a system restore, and found there was only one restore point - at exactly the
time of the first boot where I noticed the problem.

If anyone knows exactly what is loaded during the "load personal settings"
phase, and what might be safe to delete from "Documents and Settings", I'd be
very interested to hear.
