I think that my current version of XP is corrupted and I would like to reload
it. I installed it initially from the XP cd and have since installed Windows
updates. Now, when I put the XP cd in it says that it cannot reload XP
because I have a new version of XP. What can I do to install XP?
First of all it is extremely unlikely that your Windows XP would be
corrupted, at least not to the extent that a reinstall would be
necessary.
You can do a check of the essential Windows files by opening a Command
Prompt window (On the Accessories menu or use Start - Run - CMD).
In the command prompt window type the following command, exactly as
shown including the blank spaces, and press the enter key when
finished. Follow the instructions on the screen.
SFC /SCANNOW
As for your problem with the Windows XP CD, that is because your
computer has been upgraded to Service Pack 2 and your installation CD
is either the Original Release or Service Pack 1 version. In order to
resolve this issue you need to either uninstall Service Pack 2 (not
recommended) or to create a new installation CD that includes Service
Pack 2.
In order to create a new installation CD with Service Pack 2 you will
need to have:
1. Your original Windows XP installation CD (which you say you have)
2. The complete Service Pack 2 installtion file which was previously
available free from Microsoft and from many computer stores, or which
can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site if you have a high speed
connection. It is a large download.
3. A CDRW or DVDRW drive to create the new installtion CD
4. "Slipstream" software to merge the files from your installation CD
with those from Service Pack 2 to create an updated installation CD
image.
Post a response back here if you want more detailed instructions on
creating the new CD.
Good luck
