Reinstall XP all over again

I just recently install XP on my computer for the first time. I have a 2
drive computer system:
C: - 40 Gb
d: - 20 Gb

I was running Win98SE before I installed the upgrade version of XP.

I reformatted drive C: and installed Win98SE on Drive C before I started the
XP install (since it was an upgrade version). I was hoping to do a "clean"
install of XP (I realize now that I did not need to install Win98SE again)

Something went wrong on the XP installation and XP installed on the D drive.
I thought it was going to install on the C drive. During the install I
converted the D drive to NTFS. My system has a dual boot capability now.

I do not want to have both operating systems on my computer. I only want XP
on and installed on the C drive not the D drive. I was hoping to start all
over again. I was hoping to reformat both drives utilizing the old Win98
startup disk and boot to the XP CD and do a clean install.

The problem is I can't see the D drive from dos (probably because of the
NTFS drive). How do I go about starting from scratch? How can I get rid of
all operating systems and then boot to XP CD and do a clean install making
sure it installs on the C drive?

Thanks

Hi Gord.

R. C. White has given you one solution and here is another.

Boot your computer with the Windows 98 Startup Disk and run FDISK.

Switch to the second hard drive and delete the non-DOS partition.
Switch back to the first hard drive and delete the primary DOS
partition.

Reboot with the Windows XP CDROM and let it install on the first hard
drive. It will create an NTFS partition and format it as part of the
install process.

When XP is installed you can then use diskmgmt.msc to partition and
format the second hard drive as either FAT32 or NTFS as you prefer.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your help on this. I completed everything you told me
and it worked perfectly!

Ron:

RC's process worked fine.

I still have one odd thing that happens though. Before I did what RC
suggested, I used to have the dual boot feature during the start up process.
This would allow to boot in either XP or Win98SE. As my earlier post
suggests, I did not want Win98SE anymore and wanted to get rid of it. After
I did what RC suggested, I still get the dual boot screen but both are for
XP.

Is there some way of eliminating the dual boot screen now that I only have
XP on my computer now?

I think that your process would have truly taken my machine back to its
virgin state and this dual boot screen would have been eliminated. I would
probably have had a correct boot up process.

Thanks for your help

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG.
Go to the BOOT.INI tab
Click on the "Check all boot paths" button.

Good luck
