I know its sounds suspect but a 'friends mother' cannot
get to grips with Win2000 and wants to revert back to Win
98. Is this possible for a complete novice to accomplish
or should she have to pay for it to be done?
Any tips (for an idiot) or links would be good.
Thanks in advance

Hi Gerry,

Going from Windows 2000 to Windows 98 is a bit tricky for someone who is
not computer savvy and there are few things that we have to keep in mind
when going back.

If you have data on the computer that you want to protect and keep, I would
say you are looking at a bit more sophisticated set of steps. One of the
steps included is copying any data that you must save to another system
before making any changes to the current system. Sometimes we think we
have all our needed data and find that we missed that one important item
later, when it's to late.

We also need to know if we changed the file system to NTFS when we upgraded
to Windows 2000, if so we cannot go back to Windows 98 with out formatting
the drive back to a FAT file system, which means we must do a completely
fresh install onto the hard drive using the Windows 98 boot disk and the
Windows 98 CD-ROM. Even if the system is FAT, we may still have to format
the drive to get Windows 98 back up and running correctly.

One thing you may want to consider, is upgrading to Windows XP, rather than
going back to Windows 98, if the hardware allows. Windows XP will upgrade
nicely on the correct hardware and you can even run a "check upgrade"
before starting the process to see if there is anything on the system that
is not "Friendly to Windows XP". I find that XP is much more user friendly
than Windows 2000 and was designed more with the home user in mind.

If you're just not sure what you need or what you would like to do, seek
out a professional that you trust and let them help guide you the steps
that best suit you.

I hope that this helps out.
