I am reinstalling XP Pro SP2 on a laptop that was repaired for a dead screen.
I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the OS and drivers, in the same way I
did originally a couple of years ago.

1/ This time updates go to the point of asking to do Express or Custom
updates. They both get the same message;
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem"
Error number: 0x80072F78

2/ The activation process fails as well, stating;
" Unable to establish a connection with the activation server. Please check
your network settings and confirm you are able to connect to the Internet,
then try again"

I CAN connect to the Internet, I am typing this on this laptop!!! Although
it had trouble posting this and so I have copied it and posted it from my PC
now instead. I have also installed IE7 on the laptop but that hasn't helped.

3/ I try to connect to a network domain but it fails to see the domain. I
can operate around on the network fine, see files etc. The server, SBS 2003,
sees this laptop. But I can not join the domain. It was previously on the
domain and worked fine.

I also note that the laptop can Shut Down but can not Restart, it just hangs
on the Windows is shutting down screen when trying to do a restart.

Can anyone think of a solution given all of the above info? They seem related.

I'm not sure yet but I think that when they did the warranty repair for the
screen they also updated the BIOS. I am checking on that but I'm not sure it
would cause this set of issues.

I did try a previous reinstall to this one and got activation by phone but
it made no difference to the updates and joining a domainor the Restart
issues.

Help!!? Like all such things this is urgent.

cheers
Barry

OEM versions tend to require telephone activation after the initial
first activation. Microsoft has changed this because several branded
OEM versions were being sold without the qualifying branded hardware.

Tell me about it. Short while ago I reloaded a privately-owned OEM notebook
for a company user.

Despite being 100% genuine the damn thing wouldn't activate. Not EVEN by
phone. On the instructions of the 'phone robot' I had to enter a new key, and
then go through the whole phone activation process again. 45mins additional
work just to get it activated. So, what do I do? Charge the guy an additional
hour for activation, or accept that all such jobs will be loss-leaders in
future?

This sucks. It is also completely pointless, as it does nothing to prevent a
dishonest user from activating a stolen COA.

In fact, all it does is to encourage piracy.

There should be a method of by-passing the phone robot and access to a
live operator.
