After upgrading from ME to XP Home I am unable to get
System Restore to work. Tried all the options posted
here, stop system restore, reboot in safe mode, turn it
back on, etc. etc. Still getting msg "System restore
unable to create a restore point. Restart computer then
run again.."

Does anyone know how I can reinstall the system restore
feature only? Or something else I can try?

Rstrui.exe is what loads your Restore points . Read this & see if you have
it set up correctly .

1. In My Computer, click the Tools menu -> Folder Options.
2. On the View tab, make sure to check the option "Hide extensions for known file types".
3. Click OK.
4. Click the Start menu -> Run. Type: " %windir%\inf " (Without quotation
marks) in the Open field. Click OK.
5. Locate and select the file " sr.inf ". Right-click it and then click Install.

I use to have that problem from windows 98 to XP. There
is a place to be sure you have allocated (you have several
allocation amounts to choose from)sufficent space for the
resorte points. Go to Start, then help and Support, then
click third one down for undoe changes to system restore
and on the welcome to system restore page down on the left
it says system restore settings. Move systems restore
space up to maximum and see if that works. Message-----

I was unable to install the sr.inf as described. It kept
prompting me for the location of various files and finally
I was stumpted on filelist.xml.

Any suggestions on how I can get all the files needed. I
tried pointing to my XP Install CD but that did not work.

Hi

filelist.xml is in the windows\system32\restore folder - but is a hidden folder. In Windows Explorer go to Tools>Folder Options>View - enable 'Show hidden files and folders'. Try 'sfc /scannow' - without the quotes - from Start>Run - you will need to have your XP CD to hand.

What will be the affect of sfc /scannow ?
