Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.
Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure. Check for variants
of the Stop Error message.

I have allowed for error messages to show so will advise next one.
SP3 will not install - neither will some other updates even in safe mode
Most xp security updates start extracting files to a temp directory and
then they hang - usually on _sfx_.dll then after a long time comes up with a
message.

Thank you for your help - I am tring to avoid a format as have 5 years of
programs installed, one important old dos one that is no longer available.
XP MCE sp2 will not update
restore points gone
everything else runs ok and luckily most important programs [amazing]
tried to reinstall/repair XP MCE- crashes 5 minutes into it - no blue
screen even
1. In the old days cleansweep would migrate a full program to another pc -
does anything do that now?
2. where to now - done cleanup, full virus/spyware scan, defrag, chkdsk,
