Steve

I have two Domain Servers, and Server2 (only used for backup) has had problems
for a long time. I've tried various "fixes", and am at the point where a
reinstall would be best. (I don't want to go into the problems, as I'm really
just ready to reinstall)

Operations Master roles held by Server2 are

RID Master and Infrastructure master

My question, I assume that I will need to transfer the roles from Server2 to
Server1 before formatting Server2. Any problems in doing that, or in
transferring back after reinstall?

Anything I need to be aware of as far as using the same computer name for
Server2 (I need to use the same name)?

Any other issues I should be aware of?

I'm taking the step of reinstall, because Server2 is pretty much useless as it
is right now.

Thanks,
Tray

You need to do the following:

1) Run "netdom query fsmo" on both dc's to verify that they
both see the fsmo roles in the same place (on a live DC). Then move the RID
and Infrastructure roles to Server 1.

2) Make sure that Server 1 is a Global
Catalog (in the properties of it's NTDS Settings object in AD Sites and
Services)

3) Demote Server 2 (if possible). If it won't demote, run dcpromo
/forcedremoval to force the demotion.

4) Run through Metadata Cleanup.

5) Scrub all of your DNS of any entries referring to Server 2.

6) Check where the computers are trying to sync with for the Time service.
If necessary change the Time Service so that it runs on Server 1:

That should cover the bases, let us know if that cleans it all up.
