Please tell me how to reinstall my SATA driver for a hard disk without
reloading and updating all of Windows 2K P, SP4. Thanks.

You run a repair installation of win, and use the F6 option, early in the
process to load the sata/raid driver from floppy.
Why do you wish to reinstall?

Assuming you mean the controller driver. Why does it need reinstalled and
what drive controller are you using?

Sorry to jump in on a thread, but a related question arises:

If you've got a machine with SATA drives and the driver installed OK and you
need to do a repair install of Windows on this machine, do you need to do
the F6 thing with the SATA driver disk again or will it carry through the
reinstall intact?

You'll probably need to F6. For sure to start the recovery console.

To answer questions raised above: I don't know what happened but there
were many disk errors on the SATA disk. And, it may have gotten
completely full because I was running a continuous backup (DiskKeeper).
The system attempted to reboot itself and got stuck asking whether I
wanted to go into the RAID control (No. I don't use RAID.)

I booted from the CD using F6 to install the SATA driver in the
mini-Win2K system that supports the repair console. I did the repair
using a fairly current repair disk. Upon reboot (did not offer F6
function and that's right), the partitions on the SATA disk had disappeared.

I do not want to go through a Win2KP SP4 reinstall because of all the
updates that have to be downloaded and installed. It takes over a day!

Sounds like your drive controller bios may have somehow gotten confused.
Does it find the drive(s)? The drive and or controller or cables may have
failed. I'd try running the manufacturer's diagnostics tools for the
controller and disk.

Good suggestions. In fact I have the side of the case off for better
ventilation and it is entirely possible that I bumped the SATA wire.
Seagate did not supply a diagnostic, but maybe they have one on their
web site. Thanks.

Better than good suggestions. I pushed the power an signal connectors
on the mobo and the disk drive and rebooted. The SATA drive came back
to life.

So, the SATA driver must have remained in the Win2KP image that I am
using. Is there some trick to making the flimsy STAT wires more solid?

Good to hear. Not sure on the cables, maybe ty-raps.
