Reinstall Procedures

I am having a host of problems with my DNS now that I am implementing new XP machines on my network on a Win2k4 server with a single name DNS. Because of a host of problems including non-DNS related and running out of space on the root drive, I have decided to format and reinstall. What would be the best way to implement this and save my AD settings (How-To) so that this procedure will go as smoothly as possible

Single name DNS? Are you referring to a single label domain name?(domain vs.
domain.com)
Set up another Win2k promote it to a domain controller using a good DNS name
(domain.com) and use ADMT to migrate the users and accounts to the new
domain.
