Rinstalled winxp home. Before I reinstalled I backed up to an external drive
useing the MS back up. I am the only user and administrater.
The problem is trying to restore desktop items. I can restore them but when
I try to open the folder I get access denied.
The other problem is that I have to log on each time I start the computer.
Previously, a start or a restart would bypass and take me to the desktop.
I'm sure this is pretty simple but my 76 year old brain can't seem to figure
it out. And not having any luck with a search. So, any help much
appreciated.
Thank you John H

It sounds like WinXP permissions are still protecting the folder and files
for the previous account you had. It sees your new account as a different
user and has no way of knowing these are your things. You can regain access
to them by taking ownership. Directions for how to do this are explained
here:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
