Hi - I Uninstalled the post-it-note gadget thinking it was the way to remove
it from the Sidebar.

Question - How do I reinstall the post-it-note gadget so I can place it on
the Sidebar?

Thanks

Joe

right-click on the sidebar, pull up the properties dialog, and click the
'restore system gadgets' link.

-Bruce

Thanks for the quick response, but I can't find the 'restore system gadgets'
link. That option is not in the properties dialog box. I have build 5384.

Joe

I can sadly confirm, Bruce, that option is not in the Properties context
menu for me, either (x64 v. 5384.4). Is it feasible to make even the
default gadgets downloadable from the gallery, or must poor Joe wait for
RC1? I fear that if he does, his monitor will be so covered in actual
"post-it" notes he won't be able to see his desktop and his Vista Experience
will be somewhat tarnished.

:)

Hi,

Go to Program Files\Windows Sidebar and open the file settings.ini

Try to locate the post it note entry in there and delete that line. Worked
for me.

Hi - thanks for responding - I did a system restore and that reinstalled the
post-it-note gadget. But your advice will be tucked away for future use.

Joe

LOL - I did a system restore and that reinstalled the post-it-note gadget.
Having that Restore option and having the default gadgets available as
downloads would be very handy.

Joe

Glad your Notes are back. Hopefully you don't have to redo too many other
changes. Also, glad SR is working for you; some here are losing restore
points.

May I also suggest you at least look into using Windows Backup?

Vista is on its own partition and there's nothing of irretrievable value
stored there. I am just checking it out, and forwarding any problems to
Microsoft using their reporting tool.

My Vista partition is also where I am testing Office 2007 Beta 2. I sure
do miss Clippy and his friends though. Clippy taught me how to use MS Word,
and he's sorely needed in Word 2007 which is on the difficult side to learn.

Sorry, I guess it was added post-beta2. Here's the (shush! you didn't hear
it from me) crazy workaround for your build:

right-click on the sidebar notification tray icon and stop sidebar
cd \users\yourUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Gadgets
notepad settings.ini
delete the line that looks like this:
"PickerDefaultPackageSkipList=Notes.Gadget,"
save the file
start sidebar again from startMenu\AllPrograms\Accessories

(Since we don't want to actually remove system gadgets for other users on
the machine, we keep a per-user list of 'uninstalled' system gadgets, and
just don't show them in the gallery.)

-Bruce

Mostly right, except that's not where settings.ini lives. See my other post
for details.

-Bruce

Thanks for the info.

No, it isn't there on my computer!
