Hi, i purchased a used pc from an individual but the xp pro os fails the
authenticity and cannot get updates. I want to purchase a full version with
new key and install but will that require me to reformat and wipe out all
applications or will it let me during install to repair/update the current
install?

Hi rp,

You could perform a repair install of XP Pro (if you purchase Home Edition
instead, you would definitely have to reformat prior to install) and enter
the legit product key.

Personally, if I purchased a used PC, I would prefer to reformat, as you
don't know what nasties (eg., malware) might be resident on that PC.

It's possible to perform a repair installation, but I'd strongly
recommend against doing so. Anyway, if the OS isn't legitimate, do you
really think the installed applications are likely to be? If they were,
you'd have been given all of the necessary CDs from which to reinstall
them, as part of the sale.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend, your wisest
course of action would definitely be to format the hard drives and start
fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may
have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because
the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.
