I bought a computer off of a coworker, who also gave me the windows disk and
key that he got when he bought vista. I want to do a fresh install, but i
don't know if i will be denied because i am not the original purchaser. Is
there a number i can call and ask? Do i have to buy my own copy?

Microsoft does not associate any personal information with the activation
data from the machine. There is no record of the original purchaser to ask
questions about. Computers are transferrable from one owner to another and
the Windows license simply goes with it. You now own it.

You will be asked to activate Windows after you reinstall but not because of
ownership. Most likely internet activation will simply work but even if you
have to do phone activation, the activation agent will not even ask you your
name. It is all about the computer and software and not about the owner.

A product is tied to the hardware by activation, not to the user.

A user registers himself as a user of the product but the registration page
does not ask for data about the product other than to gather statistical
data.

You may be confusing "registration" and "Windows activation." They are not
related at all. Registration is purely voluntary. If you are already
registered as a Windows user you do not need to register again. After all,
there is only one of you. :)
