Hi Mark :-)

Sorry, but, you need to be more specific about what you're trying to do, and
provide the version of Windows and IE you have. Is it XP Pro, Home, Media;
IE6 SP1, SP2, etc. ? What is the reason that you want to reinstall IE6? If
you have been trying, what problem are you having? Have you installed IE7
and then uninstalled it?

Hi Mark :-)

Try the following link and download a new file to replace to the one that is
no longer there or may be corrupted.

Hi Jan,

further details-

I downloaded IE6 SP1 but setup says "a more recent version is already
installed" and refuses to install.

I have tried to access Windows Update (to repair IE) with Firefox but as I
guess you know that will not work either.

My OS was pre installed so I do not have an XP install disc.

Things look gloomy, I can see a small problem turning into a formatted hard
drive.

Hi Mark :-)

Also try this if you still need to reinstall the IE6: You will have to
uninstall the SP2 if you have it, and then reinstall the SP2 update.

Download Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

IN case you run into the error that there is a newer version installed:
Kelly's site has a fix which changes the IsInstalled flag value to 0. =
For SP1 -
This enables reinstallation of IE.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/ieinstall.reg

Just download and double-click, then proceed to reinstal IE.

For SP2 -
If you have SP2, you will first have to uninstall it. Then run the utility
as descripbed above.
Ieinstall.reg simply makes the registry edit that's called for in the 2nd
half of

How do I reinstall IE6 if I have not been supplied an XP disc with my
computer?

Hi Mark :-)

Read my reply to you at 5:56p today in this thread. I have listed a few
sites where you can download the install file to your hard drive and then
install it from there, or you can burn the file to a cd once it is on your
hard drive. These are meant to be stand alone installs, But, as you have XP,
why not try a system restore to a data and time prior to when this problem
started, if you have restore points that far back. I might be an easier
fix.

Here's the info again:

Full hard drive install versions of IE5.5 or IE6
http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/software/downloads/windows/msiexpl.html
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/

These are full version self-extracting .exe files. Download the file and
burn it to a CD. On the target computer, copy the file into a new, empty
folder. Click on it to extract it's contents into that folder. Then find
the ie6setup.exe or ie55setup.exe file (depending on the version you
downloaded) to start the setup.

When installing IE, it's best to first do a power-off reboot, then disable
any anti-virus program you may have running, then do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and End
Task on everything on the list except (Windows) Explorer and Systray. Then
try your install again. This method will help prevent any program you may
have running in the background, and the anti-virus software, from
interfering with the install of IE. Some AV software just plain messes up
an install of IE, and other programs may be using a file that IE needs to
update/replace/remove.

Also try this if you still need to reinstall the IE6: You will have to
uninstall the SP2 if you have it, and then reinstall the SP2 update.

Unfortunatley I was right, dead IE = dead computer.

understand your pain, as I have been there too. Once the IE7 is ready as a
production program (not the Beta) there are a lot of things that will be
greatly improved, and I think you will find it equally as easy and efficient
to use as FF and others. But, I recommend that you wait for the production
issue. <g>

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.

Hi Mark :-)

Read my reply to you at 5:56p today in this thread. I have listed a few
sites where you can download the install file to your hard drive and then
install it from there, or you can burn the file to a cd once it is on
your
hard drive. These are meant to be stand alone installs, But, as you have
XP,
why not try a system restore to a data and time prior to when this
problem
started, if you have restore points that far back. I might be an easier
fix.

Here's the info again:

Full hard drive install versions of IE5.5 or IE6
http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/software/downloads/windows/msiexpl.html
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/

These are full version self-extracting .exe files. Download the file and
burn it to a CD. On the target computer, copy the file into a new, empty
folder. Click on it to extract it's contents into that folder. Then
find
the ie6setup.exe or ie55setup.exe file (depending on the version you
downloaded) to start the setup.

When installing IE, it's best to first do a power-off reboot, then
disable
any anti-virus program you may have running, then do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and
End
Task on everything on the list except (Windows) Explorer and Systray.
Then
try your install again. This method will help prevent any program you
may
have running in the background, and the anti-virus software, from
interfering with the install of IE. Some AV software just plain messes
up
an install of IE, and other programs may be using a file that IE needs to
update/replace/remove.

Also try this if you still need to reinstall the IE6: You will have to
uninstall the SP2 if you have it, and then reinstall the SP2 update.

Then run the
utility
as descripbed above.
Ieinstall.reg simply makes the registry edit that's called for in the 2nd
half of

Jan, is there any way I can download IE6 whole and burn to CD instead
of
just
the stupid setup program?

:

See my second last previous reply here, I provided the information to
take
care of that for you. Sorry I forget it the first time.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

further details-

I downloaded IE6 SP1 but setup says "a more recent version is
already
installed" and refuses to install.

I have tried to access Windows Update (to repair IE) with Firefox
but
as I
guess you know that will not work either.

My OS was pre installed so I do not have an XP install disc.

Things look gloomy, I can see a small problem turning into a
formatted
hard
drive.

Hi Mark :-)

Sorry, but, you need to be more specific about what you're trying
to
do,
and
provide the version of Windows and IE you have. Is it XP Pro,
Home,
Media;
IE6 SP1, SP2, etc. ? What is the reason that you want to reinstall
IE6?
If
you have been trying, what problem are you having? Have you
installed
IE7
and then uninstalled it?
