reinstall and backing up files

I need some help. I have had my computer for about 3 years now, & I am
wanting to wipe everything off of it and start over. It is getting slow. I
have put alot of my cd's on it & I also have alot of pictures from my digital
camera on it. I want to save all my pictures, songs, & files to cd's before I
wipe my computer clean. How is the best way to do this?
 
"Best" is a matter of opinion, however Windows XP's native CD burning
capability will do the job. Open the Help and Support Center and search for:
Copy files and folders to a CD.

Windows XP also has a backup program that you may prefer. If you have XP
Pro, go to: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup. If
you have XP Home you'll have to install the program first, but that's easy
if you have a Windows CD:

Thanks for your help. I only have Windows XP Home, not XP Pro. I tryed to
write the files to a CD, but it said I have to much for the CD. When I try to
take a folder off, it takes them all off. I bought a pack of 50 CD's, because
I knew it would take more than one to copy all my files & put them on CD's.
Is there a way to add them all then split them onto several CD's?
 
As you mentioned just save your important data to CD. To do a clean install

Windows' built-in CD burning capability does not span CDs. You have to
backup in separate operations that will fit onto a single CD.

You can install Windows Backup if you want, as I described earlier.

If your computer shipped with a CD burner, it almost certainly has CD
burning software. Consult the Help file of your CD burning software.

You could also go out and buy backup software.
 
Beverly if you are using XP's burning software it is very lite and doesn't
offer much. As a Home user you are really better off with out it. It doesn't
write directly to CD and it can split large files. You might want to use
third party software. There are several alternatives. If you don't wish to,
or can not afford to, purchase a retail program there are demos that one can
use. Backup MyPC is a decent choice

will write to CD-R and will span multiple discs and has a 30 day trial.

Or you can use a combination approach like using WinZip from www.winzip.com
to create a .ZIP of your files and save it into 700MB segments which can be
burned individually to disk then reassembled later.
