Hi,

How can I reinitialize a PS2 mouse which has been accidentally disconnected
without restarting the computer?

Thanks a lot for a hint on this

AFAIK you cannot do this. Use a USB mouse if this
is a server that you cannot shut down. To disconnect
a PS/2 mouse while Windows is up and running, do
this next time:
1. Start a Command Prompt.
2. Press Alt+Enter to go to full-screen mode.
3. Disconnect the mouse.
4. Reconnect the mouse.
5. Press Alt+Enter to restore the screen.
6. Close the Command Prompt.

AFAIK you cannot do this.

Doesn't it exist system calls which does this so I can write a script?

I cannot believe that there is no way to reinit such a cricial device...

Other comments...?

Well, if the mouse was disconnected while the OS was running, then you
can just plug it back in and it will (USUALLY) work. HOWEVER hot
plugging is NOT safe with PS2 and you WILL eventually ruin the ps/2
port.

What? *How* can I possbly do that? (except for possible static discharge,
which is unlikely since I don't touch any metal parts on the connector..)

In my dealings with PS2 ports (keyboards and mice) over many
years with a few thousand PCs I have never ever experienced a
defective PS2 port caused by a keyboard/mouse disconnection/
reconnection. Even if Geir did touch metal parts on the connector
it would be irrelevant because the metal tube is connected to the
PCs ground conductor, not to an input port.

I've only seen it happen once or twice. To be fair, it was the keyboard
plug both times. Most people don't rip out their mice often enough.
