i have a sony laptop (pcg series) and recently upgraded
from windows me to xp pro - somehow disabling the toshiba
cd-r/dvd. not only disabling, the device does not show
in the bios start, my computer, or device manager. to
make matters worse, the access light on the cd-r/dvd
panel blinks continuously, like a marquee for a badly
produced broadway performance funded by microsoft. did i
mention that the cd-r/dvd carriage can only be opened
manually (paper clip..), but still will not read any data
due to not being a device under windows. i navigated to
the toshiba site and downloaded updated drivers -
failed. i contacted sony for drivers/support - failed,
and rec'd bad cust service. i performed the regedit as
cited in this newsgroup - failed. i danced the dance of
microsoft woes to the IT gods - failed. now, the
problems becoming manifest after the OS upgrade led me to
believe that this is a driver conflict/issue, but am not
ruling out hardware failure (i did read something about a
possible misalignment). can anyone assist me before i
pledge my allegiance to MAC once again.

Its its not showing up in the BOIS, then I would rule out
the OS. Has to be harware related.
