Hallo,
I can view pictures or preview thumbnails because of some unknown system
error.
My problem is probably with shimgvw.dll, resp. regsvr32 shimgvw.dll command.
If I try command regsvr32 shimgvw.dll or regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll, it says me
access denied.
Event viewer says notning.

Thanks for help.

Ales

When you try this command (with or without /u) are you doing so while under
administrator privilege?

Yes, of course. I tried this command under local and domain
administrator.

Are you running Windows XP?

Try the following command to
force a reinstall.

Go to...Start / Run and type
(or copy/paste):

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
(yes, the space after the 2 and the space
after the i is required)

Press...Enter...

You should see a dialog box that says:
DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll succeeded

Also try...

"regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and %)

I noticed error 59 from source side-by-side. I deleted
c:\windows\winsxs\policies folder and rebooted pc. Preview of pictures,
picture and fax viewer is working correctly now!

I had this error but it was related to something else. I was concerned about the security vulnerability posted here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS11-006.mspx

I tried the workaround provided here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2483185

My understanding is that the Fix-It tool changes the Access Control List settings for shimgvw.dll so that it cannot be used (and thus exploited). The downside is that Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no longer worked either.

This became especially troublesome when a Windows Patch Tuesday Update (Feb. 8th, 2011 I believe) was applying a more official patch to the problem. It was unable to access the file. I could not delete or rename it either.

The solution was to run the "Disable" Fix-It provided at the link above.

Hope this helps!
