I don't manage to clean the index.dat file via :
[regseeker] > [Histories] > [IE history cache cookies (index.dat) ]

Whenever I try to delete an entry from the index.dat, this entry won't get deleted.
I am running Win XP HE, IE 6.0.

Thanks in advance.

I have had that problem in the past as well. No matter how many times I
tried, some entries wouldn't be deleted (usually entries from Google and
Microsoft). I sent an e-mail to the program author, but got no response.

I still use RegSeeker to clean my registry, but now use ilSystem Wiper
http://www.iisoftware.net/index.php?clean.html to clean the temporary
folders. It will even clean-up the entries that RegSeeker couldn't.

ilSystemWiper is a really nice software but it didn't manage to
delete the url entries of the index.dat file either. I followed
carefully what was written in the help file : no IE running, reboot,
even switched to admin account and repeated the same operations but
no way. On my PC, urls that wouldn't be deleted are : leechget.de
and localhost.

Thanks George for this nice tool even if the problem couldn't be
solved.

Install a RamDrive, alter registry to allow you to move your TIF folder,
etc. to the RamDrive. Now, every time you reboot you will get a brand-new
and clean .dat file. When you reboot, anything in the RamDrive is wiped
clean. This is the way that I have set up both Win98SE and WinXP-Home.
Also prevents much virus and malware problems. ;)

I think I would have installed a ramdrive if Tiger's advice hadn't
worked but it worked. Thanks for your help Dude.

I use " Spider " from ... http://www.fsm.nl/ward/ ,set it to scan c ,
you'll be surprised how many places your computer keeps index.dat files ...
this is the only program that I know of that will empty them all...Mike555

This tool exactly did what I was looking for. Thanks a lot Tiger.
It's a nice one...glad to help.

Does spider work on XP?I thought it was for 95/98

Dunno. It works with NT 4.0, if that tells you anything. What I know
about XP you can fit into a thimble.

I believe Xen is supposed to do this as well. (I don't actually use
Xen, so you are on your own.)
