Registry too small?

Hi,

I tried loading NetMeeting this morning.

Later this morning I suspected something was wrong with
my computer. When I got on the internet, IE would keep
opening "Search" windows. I suspected a rogue site gave
me a "gift". There was nothing new in the Startup folder
so I suspected the registry.

Going to the usual places, I found nothing I could detect
as new.

I then decoded to reload an earlier version of my
registry that I exported a few weeks ago.

It loaded over 80% (estimated by the indicator) then it
told me it was unsuccessful. There was not enough room in
the registry (?!!?)

Then I could no longer run windows, because it said it
could not find C:/Windows/System folder. The system
advised me to put in my system disk (CD) and type "r" to
repair it. I was never prompted for this, but was offered
the F8 option.

I loaded Windows in "Debug" mode, but the system
complains about my user profile. It then tells me it will
load a default profile. Fine. However, in loading this
profile, I once again get the following: "Maximum
registry size is too small to ensure Windows runs
properly. Increase your maximum registry size."

The system then proceeds to tell me everything it cannot
find like chl99.inf, msmsgs.inf, icw.inf, ie4uinit.inf,
etc.

I am dead. I need this back.

do the next steps:

1 right button on "My Computer"
2 properties
3 advanced tab
4 performance options
5 change
6 change now the maximum registry size

And you had made a full registry backup before to be safe...

Exporting the registry is not a suitable means of backing it up and
re-importing cannot restore the registry to it's former state.
Export/Import is only useful for keys and not hive roots.

Your registry is likely toast. It is unclear if you tried the "R"
repair and which option you may have choosen.

IF you have a recent full registry backup made via ntbackup System
State or ERD (with "Also backup") perhaps you can resore the backed
up registry hive files from the Recovery Console. Even that may not
work.

That addresses only the SUBJECT question. Did you even read what the
OP did?
