Are there significant differences between Window 98 and Windows XP pro
registry?
I have lots of books on 98 registry and wonder if they are still
useful though I switched to XP pro long ago

Yes. of course.

They'd be useful only in the most general terms. They cannot be relied
upon for any specifics.

Remember, Win9x was a badly kludged together hybrid 16-bit/32-bit
operating system with a graphical user interface (GUI) shell crudely
mounted upon MS-DOS. WinXP is a full 32-bit operating system with a
pure GUI shell.

Comparing WinXP to Win98 is a lot like comparing a Lexus to a Yugo
-- the only similarities are entirely superficial.

Yes there are significant differences between the two yet there are also
some similar or common elements. You should begin with a bit of light
reading to orient yourself around the NT registry. As a starting point
I recommend the following:

Windows NT Server Product Documentation
Appendix A - Windows NT Registry
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...er/proddocs/en-us/concept/xcpaa.mspx?mfr=true

While some of the information about the technical limitations such as
RegistrySizeLimit are today vastly different and although some of the
tools mentioned (like Regedt32) have been replaced or incorporated into
other tools, the basic information in the above appendix is mostly all
the same or applicable to Windows XP.

Add the following to the read list and you will have a solid base of
information about the registry:
