Registry multiples.

Hi Everyone. I am having trouble mantaining a stable OS. WIN2000 PRO.
Don't need it. Don't understand it, but thats what I have. I just checked
my registry and found multiples of everything there. As many as 7 copies of
some files. I just formated this disk yesterday and rebuilt clean last
night. Now my programs are disapearing and registry files are multiplying.
Any suggestions as to what is going on? While I am here begging for mercy.
Is there some way of keeping all the admin tools off of 2000 pro? It is
probably dangerous for someone like me to have all that smart stuff running.
Thanks

Hi David,
Antivirus software A V G. I possess McAfee as well but I had it checking
for the past three weeks and it found no problems. I download updates daily
too. Any ideas?

This is very harsh. But stay away from the registry! Unless either (A) You
BACK IT UP first, (B) Change Nothing (C) Have a clear plan as to what to
change -- see (A).

My advice: Reformat and start over. It may be just a virus, so scan first.

Do not worry about the registry duplication. There is often a good reason.
If you suspect a problem, get a diagnontic tool. I use Norton SystemWorks.
Despite the trashing of it i've seen here, i find it a good tool. (those of
you who says it don't belong are free and welcome to suggest alternatives)

Easy way to maintain a stable System. Install only programs that you use.
Run virus checker every so often. Back up personal data files. Avoid
"Tweaking" the System.

Regular system maitienence: defrag, remove old programs, run chksdk /v /r
every so often..

When installing software, Reboot first, close all other programs. THen
reboot again (even if you don't have to).

When uninstalling... do not just delete the executable... use the windows
uninstaller.

If you have a specific problem, feel free to ask here or on the approprite
forum.

No and yes. No, those tools should stay on the system. Yes you can (should)
create a user account for yourself without access to these tools. Even
Experts often do this for themselves and onsly use the admin account when
doing admin stuff.

If you need to pursue this (rather than reformat and start
again) then note down some examples of registry entries
that are multiplying up. E.g.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\objectx.interfacey
That should have a 'CLSID' value like {012C34F0-93D2-11f4-
9064-00C04F78BCE9}. Then there might be an entry for that
big, bracketted number in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID (i.e.
down in the clsid subbranch) and that might hold a key
like InprocServer32 which has a Default string which gives
the program path and file name.
Not easy, I know, but if all else fails note that stuff
down and try the forum again. But don't meddle with it!
Remember the <Esc> key and <Ctrl>-Z are good at undoing
accidental changes in dialog boxes. Think before you
click 'OK'.
