In internet explorer (any version), when you open a file from the internet
(.PDF for this example), you usually get prompted as to whether you want to
save it or open it from it's current location. There is also a check box on
this page that, by defaut, is checked as "Always ask...". If a user
unchecks this box, they never get prompted about it again and from then on
use the option that they selected that time. Is there a way to reset this
check box? Possibly a Registry Key? Please help. thanks.

1. Open a Windows Explorer Window
2. Click on TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS
3. In the FILE TYPES tab, scroll to the downloaded file type, select it and
click the ADVANCED button.
4. Place a check next to "Confirm after download".

If you have the Acrobat Reader installed, it will override the normal
download options if the "Display PDF in Browser" option is selected. You
can regain the download control by going into the reader's Preferences and
unchecking that option, but then when you chose "OPen" in the download
prompt, the file will be opened in a separate window. You may find it
easier to live with the Display in Browser option and when you want to
save a PDF, right-click on the link and chose Save Target As.

I find the Acrobat Reader to be one of the most stubbornly unfriendly
pieces of software I've ever encountered, refusing to pay attention to the
options I've specified in some cases, spontaneuosly reverting to the
unsuitable built-in defaults in others, and failing the play nicely with
an earlier version of the full Acrobat product. Based on my experiences
with the reader, I'd never consider buying the commercial product.

the answer

for version 3.0 remove key CLSID from here
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"CLSID"=-

with later versions it can be disabled in the options of the program.
