Upon booting up, out of the blue, my desktop gives me the
following message:

The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or
alternate

Under the MS Knowledge Base #307545, there are
instructions to use Recovery Console to get into the
registry but I do not know how to get to this recovery
function? Can anyone give me a clue?

To get to recovery, install xp cd,restart computer, boot to cd,
repair, press enter for password. You should go to microsoft.com,search,
type:307545 for instructions on correcting the problem.

you need the distribution CD
del or f8 on boot change bios setting to boot on cd then
reboot with cd in drive
follow screen instructions to get to 'recovery console'
aka command line Dos style with very limited Dos command
functionality and be prepared to get really stressed out,
particularly as some of the KB instructions are not
checked and don't work or the syntax is messed up.
My personal favourite is the 'Windows cannot start
because Windows/System32/Config/System is missing or
corrupt' message - repair KB paper. I now know how bad or
mismatched Ram can cause spurious message that MS managed
not to spot creating a fix that was not needed.. on my pc
and trashed a lot of data.
Try removing all the new hardware especially USB stuff
before you rearrange the software with a KB paper
directive. good luck as I expect the answer is something
totally unrelated to the above, as usual with MS.
