Unless you know exactly what you're doing, registry scan and repair
programs can make things worse, but they're unlikely to make things
better. The two most common reactions following the use of a registry
cleaner are:
1. That made no difference at all.
2. Oh crap, this is really not a good time to reinstall Windows!

beyond that it is really important to be able to backup your registry,
preferably the entire hard drive, prior to doing ANYTHING to the
registry. xp's restore point is of limited use. your best bet is a
disk imaging tool. BootIt NG, Norton's Ghost or an old copy of Drive
Image are 3 that come to mind but there are others. an image backup
allows you to restore your registry/hard drive to its prior state if,
after doing registry maintenance, you find that something has gone
wrong.
