After removing a program I am unable to remove a file in the registry. I
continually get the message "cannot delete: Error while deleting key". This
file is named as part of the original program, but I am unable to delete it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You can delete a "key" in the registry or a "value" but
you cannot delete a "file". There are no "files" in the
registry.

Try running regedt32.exe instead of regedit.exe, then
give yourself permission to delete the key in question.

I tried this and in did not work. I'm not sure how to get permission in
xP-2000. Maybe I am doing this wrong. I right click on the key and go to
permission and then I'm sort of lost. Help would be appreciated. I don't
want to reinstall the program until I can remove this key. I have tried this
removing and installing the program over a half dozen times with the same
results. The only thing I can't remove is this key in the registry. Thanks

Open regedit, navigate to the key you want to work on, right click on it and
select permissions then give full control to your user name. Once done you
can then delete that key ....

Be careful though ....... the registry is a dangerous place to poke around
if you're unsure of what you're doing :)

It seems that your program is poorly written in that it
cannot uninstall itself properly. I would be reluctant
to reinstall it.

When you write "XP-2000" then you send out mixed
messages about your OS. Under WinXP you can
use plain regedit.exe to modify the permissions but not
under Win2000.

Steve I tried this and I still can't remove the key. I tried giving myself
every available permission and the key will not go away. I can't figure this
one out. No matter what I try it doesn't work. Any other ideas. Thanks Rusty

I downloaded the program from the internet. The program is Musicmatch 10.0
and I have contacted them about the problem and they have been little help.
I have a feeling that each time I download this program the key in registry
is what the problem is. It may have been corrupt and now each time I download
the program used it over and over. If this is the case, I will never be able
to downloaded it. That is why I am trying to remove this key in the registry,
hoping this is the problem. I was instructed by musicmatch to go into the
registry and delete all musicmatch keys, yet they can't figure out how to
remove this part. Help! Rusty

You did not clarify if your machine runs Win2000 or WinXP.

I have nothing to add to Steve Parry's detailed instructions.
If you are still unable to delete this key then I can see these
options for you:
a) See if some other respondent has a solution.
b) Live with the problem.
c) Rebuild the machine.
d) Open the machine for remote support.
If you want to know more about Option d), write a note to
