Does anyone know what registry entry is required to make a
laptop look like it is on a hardwired LAN?

Leaving the NIC in the PC card slot doesn't do that?

If you are refering to keeping the red X from showing up on the LAN adapter when it's unplugged, take a look at 239924 How to
