Hi,

I'm having this problem with a PC... The problem is, the PC logs off
whenever any user tries to log on. This has been happening ever since
someone inserted a VCD into the PC, which had some autorun application
written to it, just for the sake of preventing it from being copied.

My guess is, the application put some values in the system registry in one
of the following locations:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

or any other location which would enable the little thing to run. That is
why I have to check out the registry, but I'm unable to access it in any
way. The system logs off in all the start-up options including the safe
mode.

So the next logical option is the Recovery Console, and it doesn't allow the
REG command.

Maybe one of you guys know the fix to this problem... Please tell me if you
know. Is it possible to enable the REG command in the Recovery Console?

I don't want to reinstall windows each time this occur because I can't get
my hands on a genuine copy of Windows XP. The copy which I have turned out
to be a pirated copy... and for each installation I have to have a license.

Please tell me.

Thanks in advance.

Shafiee.

This sounds like one of two things; the drive letter has change from
original install, or the drive permissions have changed.

If the offedning problems are in any of the STartup keys, rebooting in Safe
Mode or Safe Mode Command Prompt circumvents all the startup keys.

The safest is Safe Mode Command Prompt. It will place you in a DOS command
window which still allows you to access all Windows commands, including
regedit.exe.

I would try that first.

No. Only internal and a few system commands are allowed to execute.

Some CD bootable discs such as based on Linux or Windows PE may
either provide for registry editing or execution of "ordinary"
windows utilities. Possible hazard editing registry from outside the
system.

Also look at BartPE, it's free and provides a better versatile Windows XP
boot and fix disk. It's Windows XP on a CD or DVD, that permits you to fix
your hard disk. Also provides the ability to use regedit (after installing
plugin) to fix the Windows XP registry on the hard drive.
