I booted my system today and logged in as administrator.
I got a pop up box with a message saying there was an I/O
error reading the registry and that I should contact my systems
administrator... Well thats me... So I told myself.

I was able to log in as adminstrator but it looks like I got a brand
new user 'administrator'...

I looked under documents and settings and saw an administrator.bak

I rebooted and got the same error....

So what should I do.

I've been told that I should login in in safe mode (Press f8) and then
use regscan in a dos box....

HELP!?

Follow the steps here to replace the corrupt profile.

Are you saying I need a copy of the registry and restore that?

I did and followed the links, because this is not a new installation.
So I'm not sure that the fix is valid....

New installation or not. It doesn't make any difference. The fix for a new
install is after-the-fact so a moot point.

Note step one "Create a new user account that has Administrator rights"

The new user is was a superuser, my bad.

So what happens to all of the administrators documents?
Its like that whole administrator folder is gone?

I figured it was a good time to make a copy of Administrator folder.
However when I tired to make a copy I got an i/o error reading that
folder.
I am suspecting there is a bad sector on the hard drive.
I will follow through with your instructions.. but I suspect that
there is something wrong with the drive and that the new adminstrator
created will have the same issues.

As the new adminstrator (privledged) user, I tried running some of my
licenced software
and it complained... I figure I've now lost my licencing....

Shouldn't be gone unless there was some disk failure and or major file
system corruption.

Yes, I agree the disk may have failed. I'd download and run the
manufacturer's disk diagnostic tools.

I hate this new google newsreader....
I now have two administrator folders.
Administrator and Administrator.bak

I'm sure I know what to do with mydocumets, favorites, Desktop, Start
Menu
but where is the information about my software licencing?

There are a few oem1.inf and PNF files... What are those?

default.pls

Installer.log
and a bunch of usb*.* files...
and of course NTUSER.DAT.... Which I suspect is where my stuff is...
but how am I to recover it?

ntuser.dat is the current user hive of the registry. You'll have to ask the
developer where they stored your license since that isn't a function of the
operating system. I doubt that it would be an element of the current user
hive of the registry.

Ok.. I understand what that is but how can I at least pars this file
an extract stuff from it?

I doubt if it's possible. I'd verify the license store then possibly get in
touch with one of the drive recovery specialist if necessary. Either case
stop using the disk immediately.

We've no idea. This isn't a function of the operating system. You'll need to
get in touch with the application developer.
