My Gateway comp. P4 1.5ghz 256 ram win xp (OEM)has
crashed and won't boot past windows xp screen then shuts
down. Can't get safemode but can use xp cd like I was
doing setup. Before machine shuts off blue screen with
text pops up so briefly can't be read, but I caught the
words registry error. A year ago I made a registry
backup on cd. Can this be used to repair the registry to
overcome this? And if so how is it done since I can't
boot? Thank you

1. i've had bad experiences with gateway, which is why i like to build my
pc's, but can you say when this started happening and what you did?

2. you can fix xp by trying a repair installation. boot off the xp cd
(remember to set cd-rom as the first boot device in the bios) and proceed
with the repair installation. that should get you back up and running.

Last years registry backup is likely not going to be helpful especially if
you've install software. Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration? Boot
and repeatedly press F8 to get to the boot menu then select Last Known Good
Config and see if that gets you in. Or try a Repair Install. Look here for
instructions on How To Run a Repair Install
