iv recently had a registry error (a prgoram that didnt close properly and has
corrupted the registy) on my pc which has data on which i need!! due to this
problem i have purchased an external hard drive and tried to install xp on
this so as to boot on this drive thn access the corrupted disk to get the
data off. Problem is that when xp was copying the files to the external
driver it was unable to copy the DRIVER.CAB file. After carrying on with
copying these files the pc rebooted and the blue screen reappeared again
complaining about the hard driver and drivers. The hard disk is plug and play
so this should be fine, in my eyes its the driver file that didnt copy. i
really need to get the data on the unaccesiable drive any suggestions to
either the registry fix or the driver problem is greatly recieved.

Since you have an XP cd, why not perform a repair install?

You mention XP but this is a Vista hardware_devices newsgroup. Is Vista
involved?

In any event, XP is not designed to be installed/run from an external hard
drive.

Here are some options for recovering the data.

1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Vista, or Windows XP computer. It should read the drive ok, so you
can copy the data.

2.. Put the drive in an external hard drive enclosure, connect that to
another Vista, or Windows XP computer and copy the data.

3. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

4. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

5. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.
