Registry and drivers

Problem:
I'm using Windows XP SP2 home edition and can't use some applications that
doesn't require installation but Windows XP needs all drivers to be registred
for no reason. Windows XP sais "File not found" just because the driver isn't
where the registry sais that it should be. The much better Windows 2000
searches in system32 and the application's path before complaining about
missing drivers.

Suggestion:
Why can't windows XP just ask me where the trusted driver is placed and
update the registry?

Question:
Is there a way to reregister a *.dll or *.ocx driver manually?

Too late for suggestions. In case you've missed it, XP is a mature
product and no rewrites are in the works.

Not quite. There is always SP3, for those who are interested in it.
Count me out.

If SP3 has that "rewrite" in it, I'll pay for you to do whatever it
takes to get hi-speed Internet.

I don't need hi-speed Internet. I have old school patience. You should
try to get it sometime. I'll leave the light on for ya.

Here in Chicago, folks can buy basic hi-speed (768k) DSL for the same
price as an Earthlink dialup account... and they can use their phone
while they're online... and drop a second line if they've purchased
that so the could use the same while using dialup - SAVING them money.

You must live in the boonies where no hi-speed is available.

Nope. I just don't mind dial up, because I have some old school values -
like patience. You should try to learn it sometime. I'll leave the
light on for ya.

The command:

regsvr32 (dll name)

will register the dll or ocx. Adding [slash-U] will un-register it.
