I have XP Pro and when I run the regedit the registry
pops up for a second and then closes down. How do I keep
it open so I can delete a program? It's never done this
before.

Have you checked for viruses or other malware? Many of these will alter
tools such as the registry editor so that you cannot use them.

I used Adware6 and Spybot. I also have AdShield. None of
these detected any.

Those only check for adware or malware, you also need an up to date
antivirus application and scan for viruses.

The type of behavior you describe, which also often applies to
Taskmgr.exe and MSConfig.exe (for WinXP), is typical behavior of more
than one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

None of these products can detect or protect a PC from viruses,
worms, or Trojans. What kind of antivirus application are you using?

As the others have urged you, follow up on this as closely as possible to
be sure you don't have a virus or some malware on your system.

Also as mentioned, many of these things will block the running of MSCONFIG,
Task Manager and the Registry Editor -thus making the removal of the
intrusion more difficult. The system tools are usually blocked by name, so
renaming their executables is a plausible workaround. Example: Rename
regedit.exe to regedit.com

MVP Doug Knox has a tool that automatically creates a "backup set" of those
three programs for you (renamed and in their own folder):

Note that none of these 3 free Virus checkers will work with Firefox.

Trend Micro's attempts to but won't install.

Noted, but what is "Firefox?" (Besides an old Clint Eastwood
movie, that is?)

Thanks. It looks interesting, and I'm trying it now. I don't
much like that way you have to sort the bookmarks manually, though.
IE's right-click and Sort-by-Name is so much less time consuming.

Hey, it's a young product: version .8. :)
If you develop web content, I think there are enough folks using it, that
it should be kept on hand to check page display.
