I am unable to run regedit.exe in normal mode.

I can run it for fractions of a second. Then it
automatically dissappears. Could this be a virus
terminating the application?

I already made sure there is only one copy of regedit.exe
on my c: drive

The only way I can run regedit.exe is starting Windows XP
in safe mode.

Yes, a virus or more than one.
