Regedit seems to be readonly

I have just upgraded from Win2k Pro to WinXP SP2 and now want to install IE7,
but seem to have run into a problem. The install process is not able to
update the registry. When I run regedit and select Edit/Permissions, the
permissions option is greyed out.

How do I rectify this? I am running XP as an administrator. The actual
Administrator user is not available to logon to now.

Sounds like permissions are incorrect.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I have run the job as described in the page you
referred to.

Unfortunately, this does not appear to have made any difference. I am still
unable to access the Permissions box on this computer. There is clearly
something within the security and permissions that is not correct for this
PC. I have another PC with XP SP2 installed and this one clearly shows the
Permissions to be available.

I do not want to have to perform a clean installation of XP on this PC
merely to allow me to install IE7. I have a lot of applications that will
need to be re-installed which would take a VERY substantial amount of time.

Hmm..... that should have fixed any permissions issues. Maybe regedit.exe is
damaged or was replaced? Might be there is some active malware still at
work.

Dave,

There is no active malware on this PC - it has been protected by regularly
updated anti-virus for several years together with a firewall. Before
upgrading to XP SP2 last weekend, this PC has been running Win2k Pro since
1999.

Any hints as to how to correct the configuration to allow the registry to be
amended with Regedit?

I gave you all I had. You reset permissions to default so that leaves us
with something other than permissions as the cause.

Dave

I have now managed to install IE7, by switching to the Administrator account
- re-boot and select the Safe mode with networking option.

However, now I am unable to get IE7 to connect to ANY web site. Any ideas as
to what I need to do? If this does not work soon, I will uninstall IE7 and
wait for these bugs to be eradicated before even thinking of using a
Microsoft web browser again.

I have now got IE7 working properly (I think).

I will now give it the next couple of weeks to bed in before I decide
whether to keep it running on this PC.

Just to recap, the way I got it to install was to install using the (hidden)
Administrator account. There is something in the install that does NOT appear
to like other (administrative) accounts to be allowed to install. Hope
someone at Redmond is watching this newsgroup, because this will need
reviewing (and fixing) before IE7 is allowed into the real world.

I do not quite understand why IE7 refused to connect earlier to-day, there
must be some sort of time-delay built into this code that insists on a
12-hour period of non-connection to the internet.

IE7 is still in beta and should never be installed on anything but a test
box.
