Hi,

I have just bought 2nd hand notebook of HP Compaq Presario with original
Windows XP Home Edition ver 2002(OEM) preinstalled registered to HP.

Regedit is disabled, Folder option is not in the Control Pannel and some
other comtrol pannel function are disabled.

The person from whome I bought was a lay man and don't have much idea to use
thease or any advance feature. It seams these were disabled at the time of
installation by HP people.

Please help me out how I can enable Regedit and other options which seems to
be disabled at the time of installation.

Thanks you all in advance.

The computer is severely infected and in all probability cannot be cleaned.
You need to restore it to factory condition using whatever method provided
by Compaq for that particular model. If the seller didn't give you the
recovery disks, order them from Compaq. This will be quite inexpensive.

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha

W32.Spybot.Worm

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the Spybot
mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose definitions
aren't kept up-to-date, you could try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

However, with second-hand computers, especially if acquired from
strangers but perhaps even if acquired from a family member, your wisest
course of action would probably be to format the hard drive and start
fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may
have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because
the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

Dear Malke

My Laptop is loaded with Nortan security centre and no it can not be
infected by any virus. The features must be disabled at the time of
installation to make the system safe. If a novice handle the system and try
to edit the registry? think of the situation??
So I thaught it was dissabled while installing now I simply wants to
activate it and cant find the method.

apart from registry, folder option icon is also missing from control panel
(if folder option is enabled and some one delete the system hidden files
then?? so I am confirm, it is dissabled).

Can any one help me??

Very funny. You obviously know nothing about computers and don't want to
take the advice you got because it isn't what you wanted to hear. That's
certainly your perogative. It's stupid, but it's your perogative.

EOT for me.

I'm afraid that the above does not follow at all. Norton is far from
the best, even when kept up-to-date.

By whom? Certainly not the computer's manufacturer.

It happens every day. How do you think novices gain experience?
So I thaught it was dissabled while installing now I simply wants to
activate it and cant find the method.

Well, if you know it was "disabled" during installation, then you'd
also know how to rectify the situation, wouldn't you?
