Is it safe to use RegClean with Windows XP?
I have used it with Win95, Win98, & most recently WinME, and just upgraded
to XP Home.
Thanks,
John

I've been using it with XP Pro since I upgraded 9 months ago. RegClean
works great - no problems.

Do not use MS RegClean with Windows XP! XP's registry differs
from previous Windows registries. Only use a registry cleaner that was
designed to be compatible with XP. System Mechanic (www.iolo.com)
has an excellent registry/optimizer program for use with XP.

Have you had a look at RegSupreme, Carey?
I find it much safer than System Mechanic - and very easy to understand what
it's telling you.

Correction, I have read your post wrong . I thought you meant Regcleaner.
Regclean is a different product. Jym

Interesting - I've been using MS RegClean 4.1a - Build 7364.1 for at least 9
months on XP Pro. It has never caused a problem on both of my PCs that are
running XP Pro.

Agreed....how long has XP been around and no
regCleaner? I have not used one but planning
to.

I am waiting for the book:
Microsoft Windows Xp Registry Guide
by Jerry Honeycutt

regclean 4.1 can be run under XP, but you should NOT do so!

it assumes things according to the old rules, and XP has new rules. If
you run it it'll take out entries that really should not be deleted,
especially things that Office needs. Everything may appear to work fine,
but some of the "install on first use" features will not work.

In the old days installers and uninstallers often left junk in the reg,
hence the need for cleaners. At this point in time most Win programers
and install/uninstall utilities have a pretty good handle on how to do
things right, so reg cleaners aren't as important today.

A good reg backup tool is still important: System Restore comes w/ XP and
works well for most novices. As always, if you futz w/ the reg be sure
you know what you're doing and make a backup.

My favorite motto: "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"

You're joking - right?

Can you say "Oops!" in Czech? Staff members at Microsoft headquarters may be
asking themselves that question this week after two software patches the
company released last week caused problems with foreign language versions of
Windows and Exchange.

Well, there seems to be quiet a differing of opinions about using register
cleaners in WinXP. I guess for the time being, I will not be using MS
RegClean or any other for the time being.
Thanks to all who responded.

_______________

Hi, John!
I have been using the freeware ERUNT (Registry Backup and Restore for
Windows NT/2000/XP) for months now without any problem. It includes
NTREGOPT.EXE, a NT Registry Optimizer which works perfectly under XP
Home. Available from http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt

Robert,

I've been using ERUNT for over a year now, great little program. Just
discovered NTREGOPT, but when I run it, it gives an error when trying to
optimize the System hive. All other hives will optimize. Have you any
insights on why this might be happening?

I've e-mailed the author about this, but have not received a reply.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi, Bruiser!
I have no idea why this might be happening. It is not happening on my
own system (XP Home).
I have NTFS. Would you have FAT32?
Have you got Administrative Rights over your system?
Maybe you could try running Start > Run > sfc /scannow (have your XP CD
on hand)?
Did you tell the author about the exact error message you are getting?

It's NTFS, XP Home SP1, with Admin rights.

I've never used XP's version of SFC (used it religiously with W98). Will it
replace only corrupted files, or all system files?

There's really not much to tell with the error message; it's pretty vague
("Error: unable to optimize HKLM\System. Do you wish to continue with
optimization?" I choose "yes," and it finishes up with the other 8 hives,
giving me a report at the end and the prompt to reboot. I'm wondering if
there's something particular with my system set-up (hardware, etc.), or if
some software is interferring (NAV, firewall, etc.).

I e-mailed the author a second time, but I'm not holding my breath for a
response.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Bruce

_______________

Hi, Bruiser!
It should restore the original MS files if required.

Right. Doesn't seem work the hassle (possibly over-writing newer files and
then having to re-install hotfixes, etc.) just to see if it would fix this.
Plus, I'm not so sure that it would have any bearing on what NTREGOPT does
anyway (re-creating the hive files from scratch and then restoring them at a
reboot).
