Thanks you guys I really appreciate your help and suggestions. The problem
stems from a hardware incompatability and the manufacturer who has installed
a program that closes regedit and system info so I have to phone them ( At
£1:75p a minute) or email them to which they have never replied .to fix the
problem. which I think is unfair. They do it from their end and give no
instructions on how to do it from my end.
Anyway thanks you all
I shall continue to try and solve this problem.
Regards.
Rob

Robert Palmer-Wilson,
You did not mention, what brand and model is the scanner?

You should not try to install or uninstall programs through the Regedit
interface. You can do more damage than good if you make a mistake. It sounds
that you should be in the market fer another Scanner, since this one does
not seem to be cost effective, with all the service charges involved. It
seem that the scanners software uses some type of security/remote assistance
software that they need to make changes with.

If you plan to buy a new one, and either will be buying a PC with Vista, or
planning to upgrade your current PC to Vista, consider getting a scanner
that has the drivers and software for XP & Vista before purchasing it. Do a
little on research, and check out the support pages on the scanners that you
are interested in.

1. Is the User Acct you logon with, set as a Limited Acct or an
Administrator Acct?
a. Try rebooting your PC, and during your boot up, press F12 or F8
(depending on your PC Brand), and select to boot into "SAFE MODE". By
booting in "Safe Mode", you should be able to get into:
Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> And Remove both the Scanner's driver and
software package.
b. If you have the Installation CD's for the scanner. You may need to
boot up into Windows again in "Safe Mode". Then run the installation program
again from the CD. Consider when re-installing, to do it in Custom Mode. And
look over what programs or settings are being installed, consider just
installing the drivers and scanning software, not any help or
assistance/maintenance software.
c. If you really need to get into the Registry, then again logoning in
"Safe Mode" should help you with this problem.

Thanks Byte,
I meant newbe to Newsgroups. I have some experiance and have expert advice
on what to delete as I am unable to uninstall/install my scanner woul still
like any advice on regedit. Thanks

I really do appreciate your advice and will probably do as you advise.
The scanner is a modern one and brand new.
I had been using it successfully and wanted to use another aspect but
misread the instructions and deleted the wrong proceedure, the problems
started when I tried to uninstall and then reinstall the scanner.as I could
not just reinstall the procedure.
As I was unable to do this I contacted the manufacturer of the scanner and
their advise was to open regedit and delete all references to their product
and this is where I am at, at this time.
If you know of another way of removing or uninstalling this software I would
be very much obloged if you would share it with me.
By the way the scanner is a Opticfilm 7300 and the PC is an iQon
Regards
Rob.

Robert,
I don't know why the Registry window closes immediately after you type
"Regedit" (w/o quotes) in the Start Button>Run Command. Unless you have a
security program that's not giving you access to the registry. The other
thing is you might need to logon with an "Administrator User Acct" to change
registry or delete/add hardware.

1. Did you try to use Windows System Restore, to see if you could restore
your PC before the date/time that you preformed the wrong procedure? If not
too long ago.
See if the Scanner works as it did before. Then try again to install program
that you wanted to add.

2. The Scanner manufacturer's web site:
http://www.plustek.com/support/faq.asp
Select Opticfilm 7300 type in "Install" (w/o quotes). They list several
installing & uninstalling software procedures, with their product.
After system restore you might be able to Uninstall the programs that you
are having problems with.
Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> Remove problem software. There is a list
of different bundled software, on the faq's page for that product.

3. If Steps #1 & #2 don't work for you, then reboot PC in Safe Mode, and see
if you can remove programs that you want under Add/Remove, or through the
registry (regedit) as instructed by manufacturer. You might have to repeat
step #1, to restore PC back to where your scanner was working, and then boot
into "Safe Mode".

Rich/rerat,
Many thanks, there is so much info in what you say and advise I will try all
of the options one at a time, although it may take some time.
Your info on the Plustek support is a gem, thanks. When I first contacted
them they were helpful but never gave me the impression that there may have
other ways of uninstalling/installing their products.
I have used Spybot S&D etc and there does not seem to be a problem there,
and my attempts at a couple of Restores but it takes the problem with
it.and now my PC takes forever to shut down. Never mind I will keep banging
my head against this brick wall lol.
Thank again
Rob.
