I have Windows XP professional on one machine of my own at home. I do some
business work on it. The Administrator setting some how got changed to guest
user ( Until now I did not even know about these settings), and I am blocked
from loading new applications, etc. I have learned to log on in safe mode,
and to click cntl-alt- del twice. I get a box that says administrator and
askes for a password. Since I have never had one, I click and get the screen,
but going to start, control panel and users gives me a reply that I am not
authorized to change.
Going back several steps, I have tried my name which originally appeared
along side Administrator on the opening screen, but it asks for a password
which I never had.
Please simplify your answers. I do have an HP/ Compaq Recovery disc. Do I
need to use that? Will I loose data, etc?

There are things you could try with regards to gaining back control of your
administrator account and some others in this NG will help in that respect,
or you could try and search the web for some answers.

Regarding the HP/Compaq recovery disk, if you used that to recover you will
most probably lose what you have on your hard disk as it will be restored
back to the HP/Compaq factory install. If you can stand the loss of data,
then using that disk is just one of a number of options.
