Does anyone know where the registry files reside in xp? In win9x they're
system.dat and user.dat in windows\system. But where are they in XP? I have
media edition, 64 bit professsional edition and home edition SP2.

Plus NTUser.dat in your profile.

C:\windows\system32\config

Which files? I didn't see any with the System attribute, and the
Hidden ones were *.LOG, which don't sound like the Registry. There's
an NTUSER.DAT in the
C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile
subdirectory; is that the one you're thinking of?

Also, there are more Registry files under
c:\Documents and Settings\{username}
specifically NTUSER.DAT if I recall correctly.

The OP didn't say why he needed this information, but in case it's
for backing up the Registry he shouldn't think about doing it himself
when ERUNT is available and free:

Hi,

The reason I included the registry recovery link is that it specifically
includes the files, and where backups of those files are kept. Yes, I did
not include ntuser.dat, and that because that file is user profile-specific,
not a file that is essential to the system.

Ok there must be several files then in XP. I was interested in import
and export actually of reg files into hive keys. Are there any big
differences in xp and win9x worth noting?

Bill

I rather thought you were. If this is for backup, why not try the
free ERUNT rather than try to roll your own?

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/index.htm

I figure the registry backups itself everytime there's a reboot, like
9x. I'm a big 98 nad 98se fan too and always clear all the cookies and files
from all the caches. Frees up space, gets rid of ad and spy ware. Hopefully.
But to do this with 98 you erase a couple of registry keys and drop to DOS
mode xp obviously doesn't have. Is there a similar technique for xp? I need
to read some good tweaks somewhere.
