Refurb Coolscan 4000... is this normal?

My Nikon refurb arrived today, and it seems to work just fine
optically, but mechanically I'm not so sure. It makes an inordinate
amount of noise during the preview pass, but quites down nicely during
the scan. My LS-40 is a *little* noisy during the preview but nothing
like the 4000.

Any comment from 4000 owners out there?

Thanks,
Howard

There seems to be a lot of variation in the noise level of Nikon models,
probably a consequence of how much lubricant they put on the mechanism.
I have never compared the LS-4000 to the LS-40 in terms of noise, but
there have been many reports from users similar to yours concerned about
the noise in the preview and focussing stages of the scan. I don't
think my LS-4000 is any noisier than any other Nikon scanner I have
owned but the noise is different. My LS-2000 sounded like parts inside
were actually breaking during the focus operation, but they never were
and it continued to operate fine until I gave it away. The LS-4000 is
noisier overall than the LS-2000, but the "DRRRRR" of the focus is a lot
softer - or possibly jsut masked by the higher overall noise level.

It sounds like your LS-4000 is just behaving normally, and may even be a
particularly noisy example or the LS-4000 may just be noisier than you
expect.

You might want to listen to a CanonFS4000 film scanner: it sounds like my
garage door opener.

It does, but it happens during positioning/focusing/whatever else this
scanner does between passes. The actual scanning pass is very quiet
regardless of resolution. I would be surprised to hear any scanner to
vibrate/make grinding noises during the pass.

Thank you all for your replies. I am thankful that my scanner does not
emulate a garage door opener.

I found a great website with instructions on cleaning a Coolscan5000,
which also pertains to the 4000. I may check into the lube factor if I
ever decide to slip the scanner out of its case (but not before the
warranty runs out).

Care to share it with the community - it may well be one that we haven't
seen before.
