refreshing linked tables

I have a database that was created in Access 97 that I am converting to 2000.
This database has one linked Excel table (also 2000.) This table was named
Data Bill Invoice Input. When I try to refresh the link (after conversion), I
get an error message that says ''Data Bill Invoice Input'$' is not a valid
name. Make sure that it does not include invalid characters or punctuation
and that it is not too long.

I have tried changing the name of the table to DataBill and I get this exact
message. ''Data Bill Invoice Input'$' is not a valid name. Make sure that it
does not include invalid characters or punctuation and that it is not too
long.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the link refreshed, or why the
error message is appearing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What is the name of the xls file?
What is the name of the worksheet you are linking to?
If either of those contain the $, try chaning that name, drop the link and
reestablish it.

The xls file is DataBill_Input.xls
The name of the worksheet originally was Data Bill Invoice Input. I didn't
work using that name, so I changed it to DataBill. I doesn't work using that
name either. None of the names have the $ in them. That shows up in the error
message.

This is puzzling. I have not seen this before. Did you delete the linked
table object in Access and recreate the link from scratch?
What method are you using to refresh the link?

Pre deletion-I've tried using the Linked Table Manager and the Link Tables
command. The Linked Table Manager gives me the error message. The Link Tables
commad appears that it is working, but when you open the Linked Table Manager
to view the path, it remains the same.

I did delete the linked table. When I tried to recreate the link, the Link
Spreadsheet Wizard never popped up.

This is a database that was created by someone else and I'm starting to
think that it may be a problem that occured in the 97 version of the database
and has shown up as this problem in 2000.

Thank you for all of your time and help. It is greatly appreciated.
