Refresh rate

I can not get any ATI driver beyond 4.9 (for whatever reason, this driver
works perfect) to really put my Viewsonic A70 monitor into the correct
refresh rate. It SAYS it's at 85 hertz, but it's not. What I do to get it
back is do a change to say 75 hertz, and the reply it's not OK and it resets
it back to 85 correctly. When I bring the monitor screen up, it says 85
hertz, but it is really at 60 hertz. Since it THINKS it's at 85, I have to
actually change it to something else before it will reset back to 85. I've
tried Refreshlock and Reforce but because they see nothing wrong, they won't
work either. Does anyone have a clue what I can try next? Is there a small
utility available that I can put in my startup that will ALWAYS do a refresh
rate adjustment regardless of what it sees?

Probably could do with reading your problem a few times more, but you sure
that in the advanced display options, display tab, that your monitor is set
to the highest supported refresh rate? Even if it is, change the figure,
click apply, and then change it back to what you actually want. When I
update my drivers, I have to do this each time. It may say 90Hz in the
panel, but it's 60Hz really... so I do what I just said.
 
I set mine at 85, and the monitor panel says it's at 85. After the drivers
have been installed and running through several boots and all is well, it
will sporadically boot up and the rate will all of a sudden be at 60 even
though it is still set at 85. Something is making it go back to 60 even
though it is still set to 85 and I haven't yet figured out what it is. To
make it go back to 85, I do what you suggested: change it to 75 and then
reject the change making it reset to 85. It's hard to explain and sounds
crazy, but that is what is happening. The 4.9 driver is solid at 85 and it
has never gone back to 60. Every driver since them has. So I am still at
4.9. Unless I can figure out what is making it NOT reset to 85 on a boot up,
I either need to find a way to force it to do a reset during startup or do
what I'm doing now, stay at 4.9. The newer drivers are not doing something
that the older drivers did, or vice versa, don't really know, but something
is different.

Yea, I use "Multires" from www.entechtaiwan.com to control my refresh
rates. The Omega drivers use this utility too because it works. Once
you install it have it load on startup and then right click the tray
icon and select About Multires and checkmark Lock Refresh rates, then
set your desired refresh rate for each res and colour setting.
 
Nuts. Go in to Displays and click on your monitor.
Set the highest vert refresh to 85, and also set override
to same as desktop. Sounds like you are going into
games or 3d apps that change the display settings.
You want to override any of that on vert. For horizontal
changes, make any screen adjustments manually on
your monitor to get a full size well-shaped screen. The
monitor will remember the settings for each horiz freq.
